At Sun Lakes United Methodist Church we like to have fun!
Our members are able to enjoy many activities where they get to know each other, make new friends, and enjoy each other’s company.
We have many special events at the Church throughout the year, Christmas Cantata, Choir Festivals, Veterans Programs, and Seminars & Workshops to encourage our surrounding neighbors to visit us. We enjoy getting to know our neighbors! Our Choir is well-known in the area for delivering all kinds of musical performances to delight the community.
If you are crafty we can celebrate your creativeness by offering our “Krafters” get-togethers on Monday afternoons each week where our members are busy crafting all kinds of neat things to sell in the Fall Bazaar. They also hold wonderful bake sales and sell their special “jalapeno jelly.” A great way to meet other “crafty” types!
Each year we have a fabulous “Cookie Walk” delivered by our UMW ladies in November where many varieties of holiday cookies can be purchased with funds going to support many worthy causes. We have people lining up early in the morning to be first in line for this event.
Some of our members are involved in our Fall Dinner Groups where they get to socialize with other members and have a great evening of good food and friendship. They entertain at their houses or go to a restaurant – the choice is theirs!
Sun Lakes UMC have a very active Singles/Living Alone Group who enjoy getting together to go to the theater, movies, parades, sporting events and potlucks.
Our Parish Nurse offers caring visits to our members, and is busy all year finding speakers to give Presentations to keep you updated with medical issues, and items of interest that might be important for our senior citizens to know. Please keep checking back for a special event that might be of interest to you in the near future.
SLUMC offers several support groups for those who are experiencing grief. GriefShare, a 13-week video course facilitated by our associate pastor Rev. Jean Newell, is offered several times each year. Call our office for the current schedule. Hospice of the Valley offers a grief class twice a month for those experiencing grief during the last year. We also have an Early Alzheimer’s Support Group which meets two times a month for those who have been diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
We offer several Exercise Classes to keep our members in shape! A certified instructor is here twice a week to give Tai Chi classes and three times a week for Strength and Balance exercise classes geared for our seniors. A Yoga class is available with easy stretching for seniors available once a week October thru May. We also offer an “Art of Moving” exercise class with a certified instructor from the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center once a week – offering movement designed especially for those with Parkinson’s Disease.
Sun Lakes United Methodist Church has a very active Stephen Ministry program with many members certified as Stephen Ministers offering home visitations and Christian friendship. A phone call to the Church is all that is needed to hook up with a Stephen Minister for you or someone you know to receive friendly Christian care.
Missions Activities are ongoing throughout the year and provide assistance to those in need by some very dedicated members. They take gently- used clothing, toiletries, food and “you name it” to very worthy institutions throughout the Phoenix area. They also serve food to those in need on holidays and will always bring a smile with them wherever they go. They would love to have other members join them in their pursuits.
Our United Methodist Women (UMW) group is very active with many Circles for women to join to enjoy each other’s company. They also enjoy putting on a great Christmas Luncheon for our members as well as organizing our very famous “Cookie Walk”. They have a very active Prayer Shawl program with members knitting prayer shawls especially for those in need of comfort. They have many programs to offer you the opportunity to be a part of their group and love to encourage all ladies of Sun Lakes UMC to join them.
Not to be outdone by the ladies, we offer a UMC Men’s Gathering where the men of Sun Lakes UMC gather a couple times a month from October to April, to get together. They usually have a subject for discussion and then enjoy each other’s company over coffee and cookies. We also have another group for men called “The Gentlemen’s Club,” with a group of men meeting to just “yak” and get to know each other on Tuesdays all year-round.
United Methodist Outreach Ministry (UMOM) covers many programs and is involved with feeding the hungry with many dedicated members who oversee this very important mission for Sun Lakes UMC. Some members travel weekly to the Wesley Center in Phoenix to help teach moms how to sew clothes for their children. Lots of great missions to get involved with at our Church.
Sun Lakes UMC has a very active Art Committee who oversee our vast collection of art pieces. Many members have donated beautiful works of art that have been placed for viewing throughout our Education Building.
Tuesday Nights Together or “TNT” as we affectionately call it, happens during the cooler Tuesday evenings of our summer months. We offer a variety of fascinating subjects – anything from Arizona history to airplane rescue stories to evenings of beautiful music! These evenings are very well attended and a great break from the monotony of our very hot summer time. We welcome anyone to these events where we always have a great time.
Our Sunshine Friends are a group of members who oversee receptions after memorials and weddings. They are always looking for volunteers, so if you are that way inclined, please check with the Church Office and we will get you connected!
For more opportunities in our various activities, check out our Kairos Newsletter, or our Church Calendar to see what might be coming up that you could get involved in. Call or come into the Church Office where we can help and give you a contact name to obtain more information. We will always give you a hearty welcome!
