Hal Lynn and I made a trip to Victory Place to deliver new underwear for the veterans living there. We gave each vet two new pair of underwear and a new tee shirt--140 underwear and 70 tee shirts. We also brought underwear for the three ladies who live there. We were given a tour of Victory Place and found out some interesting information:
The average stay is four to five months; Most get jobs in 35 days; in a year, 250 men and women are served; There are 22 staff members and someone is on duty at all times; St. Vincent de Paul provides their meals.
We were also interested to learn that residents pay $399 per month rent and must be off alcohol and illegal drugs. All veterans get case management to assist with jobs, budgets, social security, and driver's licenses. They also get educational training to learn computer skills, social skills and ways to adapt to modern society. The Missions Committee Veterans' Hospital Donation Group (Hal Lynn, Paul Jordan, Judy Ferrin, Julie Hise and me) want to thank you for the generous donations given of money and packages of underwear for the veterans at the VA Hospital and Veterans' Homeless Shelter. We plan to deliver the rest of the underwear on July 3. With information from the volunteers at the VA Hospital on sizes and needs of the female patients, we are going to buy these things with the money donated for that cause. I will give you an accounting of the number of packages and money you donated, and things we purchased, in my next article for the Kairos. We are proud of our church family for giving the Missions Committee so many wonderful donations to help with this worthy cause. If you would like to prepare for our next collection for the Veterans Hospital, they expressed a need for white athletic socks for men and women. We will collect them during the months of July and August.
