New Members on March 25, 2018

John and Liz Alden are transferring their membership from Dayspring UMC Tempe. John called Avon, Illinois home and received his master’s degree at Western Illinois University. He retired from teaching physical education, coaching and farming. He enjoys sports, exercise, movies, being a Mason and Shriner. Liz grew up in Iowa and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. She retired from teaching. She loves kitties and enjoys cooking, gardening and exercise. She is a lifelong Methodist, has been active in church and has served as a Stephen Minister. Their highlights have been traveling to Europe with the church chorale. John sang and Liz says she enjoyed Europe ‘not singing”! 

Lou and Marilyn Astroth are transferring their membership from Dayspring UMC Tempe. Lou calls both St. Louis, Missouri and Detroit, Michigan home. He retired from Holley Carburetors. He enjoys British Car restoration and travel. Marilyn calls Walled Lake, Michigan home. She worked as the family manager. Lou and she have two daughters and one son who is a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy. She enjoys tennis, gardening, being a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and travel.

Fred and Carol Benford are transferring their membership from Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church in California. Fred grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from Bethel University as a teacher. He retired from the auto industry. He enjoys golf and is a fan of automotive racing. Carol was born in Buffalo, New York; and lived briefly in New York City. Before retiring, Carol worked at UCLA and College of the Desert. She enjoys golf, computer graphics and reading. They both have enjoyed church and held various positions on many committees.

Tom and Pat Bleier are re-affirming their faith. Tom grew up in Wisconsin. He spent most of his adult life in California and graduated from college with a BS in business. He served in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Vietnam and retired from 42 years with IBM in management. After retirement he was active on various committees and on the board of a non-profit organization. Pat called San José, California home. She retired as a middle school teacher. They have two children and four grandchildren. They both enjoy golf, bridge, travel and reading.

Bill and Caroline Brown are joining as Associate members while maintaining their membership with South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City, South Dakota. Bill and Caroline both grew up in North Dakota. Bill is retired from State Farm Insurance Company, and Caroline from music education. They have two children and five grandchildren. Bill enjoys golf, aviation and reading. Caroline has enjoyed directing choirs of all ages and has been a church musician for 50 years. Her hobby is music.

David and Kathleen Holling Kathleen will be transferring her membership from Wisconsin Conference UMC, and David will be joining as an Affiliate of Indiana Conference UMC. He is a retired United Methodist Pastor. David was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He received degrees from University of Wisconsin, University of Iowa and United Theological Seminary. The highlights of his life are winning Wisconsin State Basketball Championship (1965) and a basketball scholarship to Purdue University. Kathleen grew up in Minnesota and Wisconsin and feels most at home “in the woods and lakes,” but she is growing to love God’s creation in the desert. She is a retired librarian. As a child, she enjoyed dancing and reading. One of her highlights was receiving a formal invitation to try out for The Chicago School of Ballet. They both call each other the “love of their lives” and best friends. They have two children and two grandchildren. David’s hobbies are Milwaukee Braves memorabilia, high school and college basketball, golf and travel. Kathleen’s hobbies are reading, writing, gardening, bird watching and travel.

Leroy and Sharon Kelsey are transferring their membership from Saint Andrews United Methodist in Omaha, Nebraska. Leroy retired as a Senior Salesman from National Wholesale Fertilizer. Sharon retired as an office administrator. They have four wonderful children and two grandchildren. The highlights of their lives are their marriage and traveling the fifty U.S. states. They are enjoying living in Sun Lakes and will celebrate their 59th year together this year.

Joe and Marilyn Klooster are transferring their membership from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler. Joe grew up in New York City and received his education at New York University. He is a World War II Veteran and served in the Navy. He retired as a traveling General Manager and Chemical Engineer responsible to technical support for the design, construction and operations of refineries and environmental systems throughout the world. Joe enjoys politics, golf, reading and playing cards. Marilyn grew up in Pasadena, California of Swedish immigrants and cultural traditions. At age 13, she began her membership with Job’s Daughters and was elected Honored Queen. She has four sons and traveled as a military spouse with the Air Force. She retired as a registered nurse. She enjoys church handbell and vocal choirs, golf, reading, knitting, crocheting and is learning Duplicate Bridge.

Steve Pearson is transferring his membership from Dayspring UMC Tempe. He grew up in Northwestern Pennsylvania and attended the University of Pittsburgh. He retired as a Contract Programmer. His highlights have been his marriage to a wonderful wife who was a middle school specialized teacher until her death. Her devotion to their children and her craft was amazing. They had two children and have ‘a bunch of grandkids’ who are his delight. Steve enjoys baking, golf, reading and traveling.

Norma Jean Ploughe will be joining us as an Associate member while maintaining her membership with The Chapel in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Norma has spent most of her life in Fort Wayne, but lived briefly in Stowmarket, England, where husband Roger served in the Air Force. She retired from Tokheim Corporation as an Administrative Assistant to the President. During their free time they enjoyed traveling and relaxing at their second home on the Wabash River. Family is very important to Norma. She and Roger have three daughters. Roger is her treasure in heaven as of four years ago. She enjoys mini adventures, luncheons and socializing. An art festival or estate sale makes her eyes light up.

Frank and Janet Rosenstock are transferring their membership from Dayspring UMC Tempe. Frank grew up in Salem, Oregon and retired from Honeywell as a Mainframe Computer Programmer. He enjoys Bocce Ball, and is a sports fan of the Arizona Cardinals, Diamondbacks and the Phoenix Suns. Janet grew up in Bayside, New York. She retired as a Registered Nurse Case Manager with Hospice of the Valley. The highlights of her life are her children, grandsons and meeting Frank. She enjoys reading, yoga, Bocce Ball and water aerobics.

George and Cathy Smoot – Cathy will be transferring her membership from Dayspring UMC Tempe and George will be joining as an Affiliate of Desert Southwest Conference UMC. He is a retired United Methodist Pastor. George grew up in Southern Indiana and spent his adult life in Florida. His first retirement was from Motorola after 30 years as a staff scientist. Cathy called Sunrise, Florida home and is retired as a registered nurse. They have a grandchild in California who will soon be two years old. George enjoys ham radio, computers, RC airplanes and camping. Cathy’s hobbies are reading and cooking.

Ron and Cindy Wright – Ron will be transferring his membership from Wesley United Methodist Church in Trenton, Missouri and Cindy will be transferring her membership from Village Presbyterian Church, Prairie Village, Kansas. Ron grew up in Trenton and graduated from Kansas State University. He retired as a petroleum geologist. The highlights of his life are his wife Cindy and discovering fossils and geology during childhood. In 201, he donated museum-quality relics of his fossil collection to the University of Missouri. He enjoys fossil hunting, golf, walking, running, time with his family, and writing fiction. Cindy grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from the University of South Florida. She retired from Ray-O-Vac as a Regional Sales Manager. She is a home based consultant with the clothing line LuLaRoe. The highlights of her life are her children and grandchildren. She has spent many years as a volunteer for animal rescue and works with the ASPCA as a Guardian Angel. She is a “dog foster mom” and Pet Social Worker. She enjoys spending time with family, reading, painting and coffee with friends.
